When was the last time that you heard good things in the news? I think it is safe to say that there has been a lot of chaos in the news this past week. Many people have been flooded with bad news and it’s hard not to drown in it. We have heard of countless deaths and casualties recently, new diseases being discovered and nations torn apart. It is very easy to dwell on the negative things happening in our world today and to not see what good there is. So, I think it’s time to make a switch. Why don’t we start dwelling on the positive things happening in our world today?
Let’s start with some news from across the world.
In India they have converted an old first-class train carriage into a “Hospital on Wheels.” Ity Pandey, a 26-year veteran of one of the most used rail networks in the world, came up with this idea so that India could provide better medical aid to people living in remote parts of India.
As India focuses on providing healthcare, conservationists are doing incredible work for endangered species. At the end of August, conservationists successfully hatched 8 chicks in order to save a very rare species of dove, the Socorrodove. This species of dove has been extinct in the wild since 1972 due to feral cats as well as habitat destruction. The species has survived by zoo conservation-breeding programs. It has been stated that about 200 birds remain of this species but these 8 chicks may allow the species to bounce back.
Now, we all hate mosquitos right? Of course we all do. Well, a cheaper and more humane drone has emerged that will play a significant role in controlling the mosquitos from Poland to Africa. Now, the mosquitos will be the ones scared of a buzzing noise! Mosquitos carry many serious diseases. But, Japan’s SORA (“the sky” in Japanese) Technologies hascreated drones that can go out and scan areas where mosquitos often lay their eggs and search for infestations. When an infestation is found, the drone drops a larvicide agent that prevents the outbreak!
Now it’s time to switch to National News.
A pizzeria owner observed people eating from the dumpster and offered them free food to uphold their integrity. Chris Kolstad, owner of Pizza Man in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, noticed that there had been people eating from nearby dumpsters. Moved by sympathy for them, he posted a note on his restaurant’s window telling them to ask for food rather than eat from the dumpsters, they’d happily give it to them free of charge. After this act went viral, Kolstad shared a link for donations in which he has raised well over $4,000 to cover the cost of the food he has graciously given away.
Like Kolstad’s kind deeds for those in need of food, people are figuring out ways to bring food to those in need. In Pittsburgh, a sort of DoorDash food service began in the late 2010s in order to serve donated food that was about to expire and deliver it to people in need. This mission is led by 412 Food Rescue. About 25,000 drivers volunteer for an app called Food Rescue Hero to find the donations of food that would otherwise be wasted and bring it to the Good Food Project kitchen in Millvale, Pittsburgh. Now, in 2025 this service has expanded to many states across the country. It is estimated that Food Rescue Hero has prevented 102 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions by rescuing the rejected food.
Community is a big factor in our everyday life. Denver, Colorado thinks so too. The first “Mile Long Table” was created in Denver by 3,400 locals. This gathering occurred at Auraria Campus where produce from local farms was given out. The “Mile Long Table” was made to pay homage to “the Mile High City” of Denver. Even Southwest Airlines got involved by providing 10 roundtrip airline tickets in order to reconnect people to their loved ones at this event. Organizers hope it will be remembered for years to come.
While life may seem hard or crazy, remember there is so much good in this world. It’s so easy to focus your mind on the negative and neglect the positive things in life. There is more to life than the bad things we see daily. When you get lost thinking about the bad things in this world or what you are going through, just remember there are a number of good things around the world and ahead of you in life.
