The NDCL drama program instills respect, support, and joy within the students and staff in lion country. The NDCL Performing Arts Department presents three productions yearly: a drama or comedy, a musical, and wings. Wings are student-directed acts that are shown in May. The selected students are allowed to be directed under the guidance of Ms. Ivancic Stall.

This year the performing arts program presented a tony award-winning playwright, The Miracle Worker, by William Gibson, in November. Students presented this play with compassion, humor, and drama on the Sam J. Frankino Stage in the Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts. The play immersed the viewers in the daily life of the deaf and blind Helen Keller. Helen’s teacher Anne Sullivan was the only one to notice Helen’s mind and spirit as they were rescued from the agony caused by silence and blindness. Ms. Shirley Ivancic Stall directed the production with the help of Concord Theatricals arrangement.

The Miracle Worker was a heartwarming play and an enormous success. Now that it is over be sure not to miss the spring musical this year. Ms. Shirley Ivancic Stall revealed it is Mamma Mia, a global smash hit written by British playwright Catherine Johnson. Mamma Mia is a movie based on a singing group, ABBA. The story contains multiple exciting love stories presented with laughter and friendship. Mamma Mia is a unique story filmed on the Greek Island of Skopelos, which played the fictional island of Kalokairi. But to shoot “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” filmmakers turned to the island of Vis, off the coast of Croatia. The musical will be presented in March. The Wings acts have yet to be determined, so look forward to Mamma Mia. NDCL participates in the Ovations Awards competition for excellent musical theatre in Geauga County and has won numerous awards.
