Taylor Swift, a distinguished artist and global songwriting superstar, has been in the press the last few weeks with rumors of a possible romantic relationship between her and the Kansas City Chiefs tight-end, Travis Kelce. Taylor just ended her first leg of the well-known Eras Tour and is currently at a peak in her career as a singer, songwriter, and performer. Performing 146 shows in 19 states, the star is making over $1 billion from this segment alone. Her fame grows exponentially as she incorporates surprise and excitement into each performance.
Travis Kelce is a local celebrity for Ohioans, growing up in Westlake and attending Cleveland Heights High School. He and his brother Jason are NFL stars, although Jason plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. Both brothers recently rose into the spotlight after they competed against each other in the 2023 Super Bowl, with Travis and the Chiefs winning 38-35 over the Eagles. Both Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were superstars of their own realms, so they were bound to meet.
On July 7-8, Swift traveled to Kansas City, Missouri, to perform at Arrowhead Stadium for her Eras tour, the same stadium where the Kansas City Chiefs play on Sunday nights during the NFL season. Shortly after Swift’s two 3-hour performances, Travis and Jason Kelce spoke about her on their podcast “New Heights ‘. Travis revealed he attempted to give Swift a friendship bracelet and meet her after her weekend shows. (For those who aren’t Swifties, fans of Taylor who attend her shows have created a tradition of exchanging friendship bracelets). He said the friendship bracelet intended for Taylor didn’t contain lyrics of her songs but rather his phone number. This raised many questions; shortly after, Taylor Nation tried their hardest to get this news to Swift, wondering if she received the bracelet.
Taylor Swift never spoke on the topic, or even Travis in general, until August came around and more suspicions arose. Jason Kelce joked with Travis shortly before the NFL season kickoff, asking him what Taylor thinks about his mustache. Travis dodged the whole question. This made a lot of fans and Swifties confused. Could they be talking? Are they dating? What is going on?
These rumors continued when Travis Kelce appeared on the “Pat Mcafee Show.” During the interview, he told the audience that he “threw the ball in Swift’s court.” He said, “I saw you rock the stage in Arrowhead. You might have to come to see me rock the stage at Arrowhead and see which ones are more lit…. We will see what happens in the future.”
It seems the future came around sooner than we thought because, on September 24, Taylor Swift was spotted sitting next to his mother, Donna Kelce, at their game vs. the Chicago Bears. Throughout the event, videos and pictures were taken of her cheering and enjoying the game, with some grabbing shots of Travis looking up at Taylor and smiling. After the game, they hopped in Kelce’s convertible and left in true “getaway car” fashion.
In the post-game interviews, the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared that because he knew Swift was in the stadium, he felt pressured to get the ball to Kelce. No one’s complaining, however, as Kelce scored a touchdown, and the Chiefs won 41-10.
Hearing this news from Kelce’s teammate made Swifties and Chiefs fans soar. Not only is Taylor’s fandom one of the largest in the world (and still growing), but combining her fame with the NFL’s popularity will have an incredible impact. After her attendance, sales for the Chiefs games and Travis Kelce jerseys skyrocketed. Some are coining this the “Taylor Swift” effect, especially after the NFL’s official Twitter account changed their bio to “NFL (Taylor’s Version) earlier this week.” This unexpected crossover has made Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s biggest topic in America last week.
After the game, the romance rumors were deemed true, and Kansas City fans could not be happier. However, the relationship comes after Swift’s recent breakup with Joe Alwyn, whom she dated for 6 years. What do you think of Kelce and Swift?
