What better way to spend Halloween by painting pumpkins and playing bingo? That is just how NDCL’s Kindness Crew kicked off their first event. The NDCL Kindness Crew is a newly generated Club that reaches to obtain kind gestures for people as well as radiating a positive energy around the school! For Halloween, Six students dressed up and traveled with teachers, Mrs. Riley and Mr. Trebets, to the Grand Village assisted living facility where they were able to build connections with the residents. The crew demonstrated NDCL’s core value of community by bringing kindness to those at the facility.
During this trip, the students and residents decorated pumpkins and played Halloween-themed bingo. Along with that they danced and sang to some fun Halloween music to keep the energy flowing and the residents involved. As the residents enjoyed their dinner before bingo, the students were offered pizza and cookies from the nursing staff at the facility as a thank-you for coming to visit. All of the residents were visibly eager to play bingo as they hurried to finish their dinner. During bingo, residents were thrilled when they laid eyes on the winning prizes. Two beautiful flower arrangements in fall mugs were made by a student who is part of the Kindness Crew. The winning residents were ecstatic when they received the prizes. The spark of joy that lit up on their face, showed the students how much their service had impacted those around them.
The joy and connections each student was able to make, brought smiles to all the residents’ faces. One student who was able to attend Kindness Crew’s first-ever outing was senior Nadia Beggiani. When asked “What inspired you to attend the event?” she replied, “By attending this event and spending time with the residents, I knew it could brighten their day. When I heard that there was pumpkin painting and bingo, it sounded like a fun time so I couldn’t say no”. Thank you Nadia for sharing and bringing kindness to all.
This event was very special for one senior who is part of the club. Leader of the Kindness Crew, Mary Pepoy shared how the event impacted one resident in particular. Mary’s grandmother who is a current resident at the facility gave a heartfilled phone call to her granddaughter after the event. She shared the feedback that was given. Mary quoted from her grandmother, “I was so happy to see you and meet your friends. It was so thoughtful for you guys to come out this way and do the activities with us. Being able to spend time with the kids brightened my day and the other residents too. I hope you guys can come back out for another event”. What a great reminder that kindness truly makes a difference! Kindness Crew’s first outing turned out to be a very big success. Hopefully more events will be happening soon! Thank you to Mrs. Riley and Mr. Trebets for planning this event and the Kindness Crew for fostering kindness to all!
