A Season Summed Up

Brody Seibert

We started the season well with a hard-fought win against Willoughby south 34-21. We were so pumped as we thought our season could only go up from there, starting 1-0, and the lions have not beaten South since the 2015 season. During week 2, we were more focused than ever, going against one of our most difficult games of the year. Olentangy, a division 1 school right outside of Columbus, facing this team away from us posed a challenge as it is a 2-hour and 15-minute bus ride for us. We knew we had to be at our best to win; we got there early to stretch and get moving for the game. We started the game strong with a bomb of a pass from our quarterback Ryan Lipowski to Brandon Smul, who was wide open for a 57-yard touchdown! We thought nothing could stop us from that play forward and were leading the rest of the game. With less than a minute left in the game, they scored and completed a 2-point conversion to tie the game 28-28. We were headed to overtime thinking: how could this ever happen as we played the best football we could? Unfortunately, in overtime, we lost 34-28, crushing our spirit, and their revenge was complete as we beat them last year on the previous play of the game Ryan Niksa sealed the deal for us as he got the tackle during their 2-point conversion to win us the game. That game defeated us, as we would lose the next three games in a row.

Halfway through the season, we knew we did not have an excellent winning record, but the entire team was still hoping to get back on track. In our week five game against Taft, we would lose a vital part of our offense and defense, losing Brandon Smul, who led our team in receiving yards accumulating over 350 yards in the first four games. Brandon tore his MCL and would be out for the rest of the season, or so we thought… Week 6 came around, and we were hyped for this game against East Liverpool, and we showed up significantly, winning the game 48-0. Our running-back Burke Buell made for an incredible game with over 200 rushing yards, this being his biggest game yet. At this point in the season, we were 2-5, upset yet still determined to get better, especially coming off the big win; we were ready for week seven against Walsh. This game would be challenging, as we knew they were formidable opponents. We sadly lost 23-51. Burke Buell again got over 200 yards, racking up 236 rushing yards. This was another tough loss for us, and we would go the next two games losing in week nine, although we did have a glimpse of hope against Louisville as we went into a double overtime situation in which we would end up losing 17-24. In week 10, the team mirrors our rivals Lake Catholic. We knew this would be our most crucial game of the year, and we had to focus, but we were more excited than ever as Brandon Smul, our star receiver, was coming back from his MCL tear and could not believe it. But once again, we would lose in our most important game of the year and finish our season 2-8. It is a very emotional and brutal end to our season, especially for the senior boys.
