Anticipation is high for the 2023 Ocean Race. Here, sailors compete in a challenge to sail worldwide, and five world-class teams compete for the cup. Over eight months, these sailors make a long and treacherous trip worldwide.

THE TEAMS

Five major teams are competing this year.

  • 11th Hour Racing Team of the United States
  • GUYOT Environment of Europe
  • Team Holcim of Switzerland
  • Team Malizia of Germany
  • Biotherm of France

THE ROUTE

The regatta makes multiple stops along many beautiful cities around the world.

The race kicked off about a month ago in Alicante. The first leg was a quick jump south to Cabo Verde. From there, they traveled even further south to Cape Town. The third leg is the longest, from Cape Town to the South American port of Itajai. This journey is the deadliest, with extreme foul weather from the South Pole. They will endure sub-zero temperatures, strong winds with huge gusts, and large waves. Crew members must take shorter shifts to stay warm. After about two months, the sailors arrive in Itaji. From there, they have a comparatively short trip to Newport and Aaharus. The final few legs are extremely short, from Kiel, around the Hague, and the finale in Genova.
