The Geauga County Fair is an annual event in Geauga County, Ohio, USA. It is one of the state’s oldest and longest-running county fairs, with a rich history dating back to the 19th century. Here is a short historical rundown of the Geauga County Fair:
Early Years: The Geauga County Fair was first organized in 1823, just a few years after the establishment of Geauga County itself in 1806. It began as a small gathering of local farmers and residents to showcase their agricultural products and livestock.
Agricultural Showcase: Throughout its history, the fair has remained primarily focused on agriculture, providing local farmers and farming enthusiasts with a platform to exhibit their animals, crops, and skills. It has played a significant role in promoting agricultural practices and educating the public about farming.
Growth and Development: The Geauga County Fair grew in size and popularity over the years. More attractions and entertainment options were added to the event, including amusement rides, food vendors, live entertainment, and various contests.
This year’s fair was no exception. Even amid its final hours, the fairgrounds were vibrant and full of life. The turnout was massive as people from all over Northeast Ohio and beyond enjoyed all it offered. The livestock shows were widespread, with people coming to see the animals and learn about agriculture. The midway was also a popular spot, with people enjoying rides and games.
We even managed to spot our Lion Lunatics mascot at a few of the games.
And, of course, no fair would be complete without food, and the Great Geauga County Fair had plenty of options.
This past weekend, the NDCL community showed up and out for the Geauga County fair, between performances, livestock showings, rodeo, and more. As per annual tradition, this Sunday, September 3, the NDCL Marching Lions performed on the horse track in front of the grandstand alongside many other notable Geauga County bands, such as Kenston, West Geauga, Chardon, and more. The setlist consisted of “All In” – Stray Kids, “Love Runs Out” – One Republic, “Made You Look,” followed “No,” both by Megan Trainor, and it closed with “Thrift Shop” – Macklemore, followed by the NDCL fight song as they marched off the track. They performed in front of an almost packed grandstand, led by drum major Kate Williams, assistant drum major Caden Basile, colorguard captain Grace Breen, and Colorguard lieutenant Lizzie Tabernik. However, this was not the only notable lion appearance at the Labor Day weekend fair.
Many lions attended the fair to compete with their livestock and projects and compete in skills, with some winning several awards for their accomplishments. Senior Grace Breen and freshman Ian Greenwalt took home awards in the barns. The miniature horse Grace showed, pictured below, won third in showmanship and fifth in obstacles, while Ian’s pig won 6th in the market, selling for $1,800, alongside his chickens, which sold for $500. In other areas of the fair, there were more notable lions, with senior Maria Kimball participating in the barrel racing portion, senior Robbie Moore participating in bull riding, and junior Sophia Stolarik placing 3rd in the fairy garden competition with her work, shown below. Great job, lions!
Overall, the 2023 Geauga County Fair was a great success. It was a fun and family-friendly event that brought people together from all over the community. We hope to see you there next year!
